Protected mammal surveys
We provide in-house expertise to survey protected mammal species including bats, badger, otter, water vole, wildcat, pine marten and red squirrel. We can also undertake surveys of species such as beaver, brown hare, mountain hare and deer species.
A survey and assessment for potential impacts to protected mammal species is likely to be required in support of a planning application or protected species licence application. We provide in-house expertise of protected mammal species survey and assessment, design of mitigation, licence applications and where applicable information to support Appropriate Assessments for Natura 2000 sites (SACs). We have a wealth of experience in assisting with licence applications for protected mammals and have successfully designed and implemented mitigation measures in many different situations. We own a variety of camera traps to assist with protected mammal surveys and where appropriate and under licence these are used to gain valuable information to support our surveys.
Examples of projects which are likely to require a survey and assessment of protected mammals include:
housing and commercial developments
infrastructure projects (roads, rail, power lines and footpaths)
change of land use, e.g. afforestation
watercourse crossing points (road, rail, power line, pipeline)
pond restoration and management
SUDS and drainage affecting watercourses
vegetation clearance, tree felling/pruning
woodland management
ecological impact assessment including hydro-power schemes, wind farm developments, mineral extraction and coastal infrastructure projects
